Voluntarily stopping eating and drinking, termed VSED, is an end-of-life option pursued by some patients determined to hasten their deaths. An article published in the New York Times online tells the stories of a handful of patients who chose VSED to end their lives and describes legal and ethical considerations and reports findings from VSED studies.
