Over the past two decades, there has been a global increase in prescription opioid use accompanied by an increase in patients who are tolerant to opioid effects, making pain management options challenging. Opioid-tolerant patients need higher opioid doses to achieve pain relief and often struggle with withdrawal symptoms and psychosocial issues. A review published in US Pharmacist recommends a multidisciplinary and multimodal approach to acute pain management in this patient population.
