Many patients and their providers develop long-standing relationships that withstand decades. Although the care of chronic conditions may be objective, over time health care providers discuss subjective matters and really get to know a patient. The perspective of two medical doctors on the care of a recently deceased 87-year-old patient, published in The New England Journal of Medicine, tells of lessons learned and inspiration gained.
