In this palliative care blog, the findings of a recent single-center, double-blind, randomized trial on the use of neuroleptics for terminal agitated delirium is discussed. Researchers at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center evaluated the effect of three neuroleptic strategies (escalation, rotation, combination) on refractory agitation in patients with cancer with terminal delirium and found each strategy to be equally helpful.
