Common Non-Malignant Causes of Low Back Pain in Patients with Serious Illness

The Palliative Care Network of Wisconsin (PCNOW) provides peer-reviewed, evidence-based summaries of key palliative care topics (“Fast Facts”). Nearly 25% of the population experience low back pain (LBP) in any given year with a lifetime prevalence of up to 85%. Even among cancer populations, a significant amount of LBP have non-malignant causes. This Fast Fact reviews common non-cancer etiologies of LBP which clinicians may encounter when caring for seriously ill patients.
