Dr. Robert Arnold, a palliative care physician at the University of Pittsburgh critiqued a study reported in the 2013 Journal of Pain and Symptom Management of docusate for the management of constipation in hospice (Tarumi, et al 2013). Arnold maintains that although docusate still seems to be the drug of choice to prevent constipation, there is no data to support its effectiveness.
