The use of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), a form of life support for those with refractory respiratory or cardiac failure, has been steadily increasing. Unfortunately, some patients receiving ECMO do not recover, and a decision is made to discontinue ECMO. This Fast Fact discusses practical aspects of ECMO discontinuation in the dying patient.
