The Growth of Palliative Care in U.S. Hospitals: A Status Report

Hospital-based palliative care programs have demonstrated their value for the seriously ill and growth in their development have been described in published reports in 2001, 2005, 2008 and 2011.  The most recent report was published in the January 2016 issue of the Journal of Palliative Medicine. Data for this report were obtained via survey and from the American Hospital Association (AHA) Annual Surveys, the National Palliative Care Registry, the Dartmouth Atlas of Healthcare, the American Census Bureau’s American Community Survey (ACS) and web searches.  The report tracks the growth of hospital palliative care programs across the 50 states over the past four years and identifies areas where persistent gaps in access remain.
