How Does End of Life Impact Diabetes Care?

Among older adults with type 2 diabetes (T2D), the use of antidiabetes medications declined in the last year before death, with notable shifts from metformin and sulfonylureas toward insulin therapy. Current recommendations emphasize a more liberal approach to glycemic control in people with a high burden of comorbidities and shorter life expectancy, but little is known about the changes and discontinuation patterns of diabetes medications among older adults near the end of life. Researchers conducted an observational cohort study to assess the prescribing trends of antidiabetes medications in the final year of life among community-dwelling Medicare beneficiaries with Type 2 Diabetes.
