Live discharges from hospice often leave both patients and families with unmet care needs previously managed by the comprehensive services of hospice care. In a systematic review of research studies focused on live discharges from hospice, investigators sought to identify common characteristics of live discharges, including their frequency as well as patient and hospice-specific information. Although patient characteristics varied without a common theme, live discharges seemed more likely among for-profit hospices and hospices located in rural areas.
