Hospice is a small part of the overall healthcare industry, with unique pharmacology and standards of care. That can present challenges for clinicians entering the hospice field from other specialties or seeking to keep their skills and knowledge up to date. Enclara Pharmacia pharmacists maintain a library of educational resources and reference materials to help fill this gap. Now, they have created a new and easier way to learn best practices in hospice symptom management: Micro Courses from the Enclara Learning Academy™.
Exclusively for staff of Enclara’s hospice clients, Micro Courses can be completed in under 10 minutes on a mobile device. “Nurses value our longer-form continuing education resources, but they don’t always have time to spend half an hour or more on training,” Enclara Vice President of Implementation & Education Karen Bergenholtz, RN, MSN, CRNP, said. “With Micro Courses, they can hop on from their mobile device whenever they have a few minutes of downtime.”
Courses Based on Hospice Nurse Feedback
Enclara’s learning and development professionals developed the Micro Courses format through feedback from hospice nurses. Topics are drawn from the most common clinical support requests from Enclara clients. The goal is to help learners identify contributors to troublesome symptoms and understand non-pharmacological and pharmacological interventions to improve patient comfort.
“Hospice is a very independent clinical specialty for nurses, particularly in home settings where you are the primary contact for patients and their family members,” Bergenholtz said. “Micro Courses are a good fit for that paradigm as they offer self-directed learning opportunities on the go.”
Drawn from Enclara’s Palliative Pearls clinical features, courses cover the basics of managing symptoms commonly encountered in end-of-life care. New courses will be added monthly to offer an ever-expanding library of on-the-go learning opportunities for hospice teams. They complement the wide variety of informative education and professional development resources including free CE courses and online training. Learners benefit from opportunities to enhance skills and grow professionally and access the information they need to provide the best possible experience of care. Staff of Enclara hospice partners can access the courses in E3 Pro™ while hospices using the Enclara At Your Pace Learning portal can assign courses and track completions.
